CalTrans will be repaving
the intersection at 25th / Western
from October 7 to 8th (maybe Oct 9th)

Per Cal Trans:

“Please be advised that we are planning to repair or resurface the pavement at Western Avenue and 25th Street on October 7th and October 8th.

To do, this, it will require us to close some of the lanes on Western Avenue and 25th Street.

The proposed plan for traffic control is:
•    Tuesday, October 7th – All southbound  traffic on Western Avenue will be diverted East (left turn only) from 9:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M.
•    Wednesday, October 8th - (All traffic) North & South on Western Avenue & East & West 25th  will only be able to make (right turns) from 9:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M.

There is the possibility that it could go a little past 2:00P.M.

Any work that is not completed within these 2 days will be very minimal with very minor traffic control.

Please convey this message to your local community, neighbors and friends”.

 Neighborhood Watch Minimize
Next Neighborhood Watch Meeting:

Wed., 10/8
6:30-7:30pm
South Shores Elementary School
(2060 W. 35th Street)

We have seen an a slight increase in both residential burglaries and burglaries from motor vehicles in the South Shores areas.  I wanted to share with you the following:

During our crime prevention walk,
we passed out nearly 500 cards that indicated the following:
  • Personal property left in plain sight
  • Vehicle was unlocked and uattended
  • Cell phone in vehicle
Burglaries:  Knucklehead(s) have entered through side UNLOCKED garage doors.  If you have a side garage door, be sure it's locked.  Also be sure you have adequate lighting i.e. motion sensor lighting.

Burglaries from Motor Vehicles:  Knucklehead(s) are checking the area for UNLOCKED car doors.  Upon entry, they remove property.  Be sure to lock your vehicles and if you have an alarm, be sure to activate your alarm.

For those of you going on vacation, be reminded of the following:
  • Preventing crime during family travel starts with making sure your home is protected while you're away (find out more about securing your home and property).

The key is to make it look like you never left.

  • Keep shades and blinds in their normal positions.
  • Stop mail and newspapers, or ask a neighbor to pick them up every day.
  • Put several household lights on timers so they turn on and off at appropriate times.
  • Arrange to have grass mowed while you're gone.
  • Make sure all your door and window locks are in working order - and use them.
  • Activate your home alarm (if you have one).
  • You might even leave a radio on - or put it on a timer. Ask a neighbor to park in your driveway  overnight - anything that might suggest someone's home.

And don't forget to lock all doors and windows when you leave.
*Let your neighbor know that you are going on vacation so that he/she could keep an eye on your home.

We will be holding our quarterly neighborhood watch meeting in September...stay tuned for the date and time.

For now, stay safe.

 Cell Phone Clarification Minimize
The following are excerpts from CHP's
Wireless Telephone Laws FAQs

(click for full document),

courtesy of Lead Officer Joe Buscaino.

Q: When did the new wireless telephone laws take effect?
A: The new laws took effect July 1, 2008

Q: What is the difference between the two laws?
A: The first prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle. (Vehicle Code (VC) §23123). Motorists 18 and over may use a hands-free device. Drivers under the age of 18 may NOT use a wireless telephone or hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle(VC §23124).

Q: What if I need to use my telephone during an emergency, and I do not have a hands- free device?
A: The law allows a driver to use a wireless telephone to make emergency calls to a law enforcement agency, a medical provider, the fire department, or other emergency services agency.

Q: What are the fines if I’m convicted?
A: The base fine for the FIRST offense is $20 and $50 for subsequent convictions. According to the Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedule, with the addition of penalty assessments, a first offense is $76 and a second offense is $190.

Q: Will I receive a point on my drivers license if I’m convicted for a violation of the wireless telephone law?
A: NO. The violation is a reportable offense: however, DMV will not assign a violation point.

Q: Will the conviction appear on my driving record?
A: Yes, but the violation point will not be added.

DRIVERS 18 AND OVER

Q: Does the new “hands-free” law prohibit you from dialing a wireless telephone while driving or just talking on it?
A: The new law does not prohibit dialing, but drivers are strongly urged not to dial while driving.

Q: Will it be legal to use a Blue Tooth or other earpiece?
A: Yes, however you cannot have BOTH ears covered.

Q: Does the new hands-free law allow you to use the speaker phone function of your wireless telephone while driving?
A: Yes.

Q: Does the new “hands-free” law allow drivers 18 and over to text page while driving?
A: The law does not specifically prohibit that, but an officer can pull over and issue a citation to a driver of any age if, in the officer’s opinion, the driver was distracted and not operating the vehicle safely. Text paging while driving is unsafe at any speed and is strongly discouraged.

DRIVERS UNDER 18

Q: Am I allowed to use my wireless telephone hands free?
A: NO. Drivers under the age of 18 may not use a wireless telephone, pager, laptop or any other electronic communication or mobile services device to speak or text while driving in any manner, even hands free. EXCEPTION: Permitted in emergency situations to call police, fire or medical authorities. (VC §23124).

The South Shores Homeowners Association (SSHOA) serves the South Shores neighborhood of the community of San Pedro (L.A.) on the South Bay Peninsula directly opposite Catalina Island (see yellow box below).

South Shores was first developed in the 1950’s. It is bounded on the north by Morse and Cumbre Drives, on the east by Western Avenue, on the south by the Pacific Ocean (Paseo Del Mar and Warmouth Street) and on the west by the Los Angeles/Rancho Palos Verdes city boundary.

Within these boundaries are commercial properties along 25th Street and Western Avenue, several apartment complexes, three condominiums and about 1,450 single family homes.

For more information, click info@southshoresha.org.

Here's some demographic data: According to the 2000 Census...

  • There were 3,615 people living in the South Shores community.
  • Their median age was 51.6 years.
  • The ratio of males to females was 46.6% to 53.4%.
  • There were/are 1,590 households in the neighborhood, of which 87.6% were owner occupied.
  • The median household income was $78,946.
  • The median home price was $404,900. At a compounded rate of 15% per year, that would make the median price $814,400 today. (Too high?...Too low?)
  • In the year 2000, there were 28 homes valued in excess of $1 million. Wonder what it is today?

 Door-to-Door Solicitation Minimize
I have been receiving many phone calls about aggressive door to door solicitors in the South San Pedro area. I was recently in the Palisades area at 37th-Walker and arrested one of the solicitors for illegal sales. He did not have a valid permit to sell books in the City of Los Angeles. When asked how he calls his boss to pick him up, he stated that he uses a customer's home telephone.

Please do not purchase items from these solicitors nor let them in to use your telephone. They are conducting illegal business. I was told by the solicitor that the reason they solicit in San Pedro is due to the large amount of people who purchase the items.
