Anchovy & 25th: Watch Out! Minimize

We all need to be conscious of intersection safety in our neighborhood.  I almost got hit by a car while walking back up Anchovy Ave on my way home from the beach with a friend Sun. eve. at 25th & Anchovy.  The driver was waiting at the signal coming down Anchovy & was set to make a L/H turn onto 25th St.

As I entered the crosswalk when the light turned green, the driver proceeded to make his left hand turn seemingly unaware of our presence.  Luckily, I jumped out of the way and after he realized the near miss, he gestured greatly that he was sorry.  His field of view to the left was partially hampered by the L/H side windshield post plus it was dark and he just didn't manage to see us.

I should have known better and been more vigilant as a few month's back the roles were reversed.  I was driving to work on a foggy morning and a lady was walking across the street with her small dog (exact same spot) wearing a black outfit and I just didn't see her until coming really close--then I was the guy doing all of the apologizing.

A cascading of events could have led to something really bad:  Morning groggyness, foggyness combined with her black outfit giving a more monotone presence plus the position of windshield post which obscured the corner of the intersection where she was standing waiting for the light to turn green.  The moral of the story is never assume the other person sees you!

 New Vegetation Guidelines Minimize

The Bureau of Street Services just released new guidelines for vegetation that can be planted without permits for residential parkways (the area between the curb and the sidewalk). Now residents can plant 20 approved drought tolerant species including two types of strawberries, Chamomile and Thyme.

 Foreclosure Maintenance Minimize
A new Los Angeles City ordinance sponsored by City Council President Eric Garcetti was recently passed that now compels banks and other financial lending institutions that own vacant, dilapidated and/or nuisance properties in the City of Los Angeles to keep them clean and safe.

The ordinance now makes these firms responsible for maintaining the properties as soon as they issue a notice of default.  In addition to requiring banks to register their defaulted homes with the City, the ordinance also allows the City to levy a fine per day.

Loa Sprung -- Good Neighbor Minimize

I would like to nominate Loa Sprung for a South Shores HA Good Neighbor Award. She is a wonderful neighbor to artists and art appreciators in San Pedro.

Loa is a talented watercolor artist, who loves to share her enthusiasm for painting.  Her artwork is experimental and she tries to approach each painting in a new way.  She regularly opens her home and studio to the community and in 2009 she hosted the SSHA Annual Reception.  Loa taught art to adult and high school students for many years.  When she left teaching 25 years ago, she missed the community of artists and opened her home studio to artists and wannabe artists to come paint with her on a weekly basis.  She continues to paint with different groups of friends three or four days a week and always offers encouragement and helpful suggestions.  Her studio also houses a large printing press that friends of hers frequently use.

Loa is an enthusiastic promoter of the National Watercolor Society, a national organization that has its headquarters right here in San Pedro at 915 S Pacific Ave. The NWS building was a former restaurant that has been transformed into a beautiful gallery and workshop space, under Loa’s aegis.  Loa has been on the NWS board of directors while dreams for the gallery were being realized. She has served as Recording Secretary, President, Third Vice President, Membership and Communications Chairman, Building Director and Member Show Chairman.

 Artscape - 25th & Mermaid Minimize

On behalf of the residents of South Shores, we, the South Shores Homeowner's Association, are hereby pleased to have the opportunity to dedicate this “Artscape” to the residents of South Shores. This dedication ceremony is conducted with the good intention of enhancing the daily lives of our community members by fostering a sense of “pride in belonging” to the South Shores community.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the artistic designers and creators, Theodora Kurkchiev and Dimitri Lazaroff of TND Studios Inc., for their most excellent work and do here-by acknowledge final acceptance of said “Artscape” by the South Shores Homeowners’ Association. That being said it is my pleasure to present you with a check for final payment. Thank you Teddy & Dimitri.

Thanks also to the homeowner, Mrs. Dana Carozza who has most graciously granted us permission to install this “Artscape” on her property. Dana has been so very helpful and supportive, always responding to my email questions in a most timely manner and with such positive responses. Thank you Dana.

Last but not least, thank you to the SSHOA board members who supported this project and helped to bring it forth from concept to reality. Thank you SSHOA board members.

Special thanks go to Mrs. Joyce & Mr. Vern Hall who put together the original concept and presented it to the SSHOA board for consideration. They have also worked closely with Teddy & Dimitri from the very beginning concepts, to the final installation, to ensure the ultimate success of this noteworthy project. Thank you Joyce & Vern.

South Shores Demographics
Minimize

Here's some demographic data: According to the 2000 Census...

  • There were 3,615 people living in the South Shores community.
  • Their median age was 51.6 years.
  • The ratio of males to females was 46.6% to 53.4%.
  • There were/are 1,590 households in the neighborhood, of which 87.6% were owner occupied.
  • The median household income was $78,946.
  • The median home price was $404,900. At a compounded rate of 15% per year, that would make the median price $814,400 today. (Too high?...Too low?)
  • In the year 2000, there were 28 homes valued in excess of $1 million. Wonder what it is today?

South Shores Elementary Celebrates Awards Minimize

South Shores Performing Arts Magnet School in San Pedro is celebrating several recent major awards.

The campus was named a 2010 Blue Ribbon School, one of 264 public schools nationwide and only 26 in California to receive the top academic award. Three other local campuses were so honored.

(Click for larger picture)

The elementary campus was also given the Golden Bell Award by the California School Boards Association for the school's visual and performing arts curriculum.

The campus recently celebrated with LAUSD board member Richard Vladovic, City Councilwoman Janice Hahn and others.

Principal Paul Suzuki said the school provides a unique, nurturing environment and the performing arts curriculum provides a "nice tie-in" with mainstream academics. Parents and teachers have a "wonderful chemistry," he said.

"I think the culture of the school in general is inviting and warm and everyone takes ownership," Suzuki said.

 Pushbutton Crosswalk Minimize
COUNCILWOMAN JANICE HAHN
ANNOUNCES
PUSH BUTTONS
AT 25th AND MORAY

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn has announced the installation of crosswalk push buttons at the intersection of 25th Street and Moray Avenue, where there is a flashing crosswalk.  Previously, the lights were designed to flash when a pedestrian stepped into the crosswalk, but the system did not work properly.  Now with the new push buttons, the lights will flash only when the buttons are pressed.  This way, when pedestrians want to cross at the intersection, they will be able to do so safely, but when no one is trying to cross, cars will not have to slow down needlessly.

“I was never convinced that the “smart” crosswalk was a good idea,” said Councilwoman Hahn.  “I thought it was dangerous, and I’ve always said that it should be operated manually.  Now, finally, pedestrians will be able to cross this intersection safely.  But I still want to encourage people to slow down on 25th Street.”

(
FYI, as she promised at the SSHOA Annual Meeting, March 16 -- see next column)

 LAPD Policy: Solicitors Minimize
Recently some of you have expressed concern over persons who have knocked on your doors late in the evening stating that they work for ADT Alarm Company and asking if you would wanted to upgrade you alarm systems.  From what I understand, these people have been pushy and aggressive with their sales tactics.  Furthermore, Los Angeles Municipal Code prohibits door to door solicitation between the hours of 9 PM and 8 AM (SEE MUNICIPAL CODE BELOW).

SEC. 41.43.1.  DOOR TO DOOR SELLING OR SOLICITING.

No person shall, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. of the following day, solicit, sell or offer to sell, demonstrate or take orders for the sale of goods, wares or any form of merchandise, by entering upon the premises of another for such purpose. The provisions of this section shall not apply to vendors or solicitors who have previously been invited or requested to appear at such premises by the owner or lawful occupant thereof, or to persons making charitable solicitations in accordance with Article 4 of Chapter IV of the Los Angeles Municipal Code.  (Added by Ord. No. 142,173, Eff. 8/14/71.)

I spoke to Mr. Joe Racz (Supervisor @ ADT Corporate Customer Service Do not call/ Do not solicit).  Mr. Racz stated that ADT Corporate does not conduct door to door solicitation, but rather contracts that service out to private companies.  Mr. Racz seemed very concerned and attentive to the problem.  He wanted me to express to all of you that ADT does not condone pushy/ aggressive sales.  If this problem persists, Mr. Racz wants you to contact him directly, see Email and phone number below.  He asks that you try and get some information for him so that he may properly follow up.  He is asking for a name, ID#, company name, etc.  Sometimes these people will even have a pamphlet to hand out.  This will help him.

Phone number: (direct extension)  1.866.561.0952 ext.4724
Mr. Racz is in the office Monday thru Friday 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time
