                         SOUTH SHORES HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION
                      BOARD MEETING – JANUARY 19, 2010

The January board meeting of the South Shores Homeowners Association (SSHOA) was held at the home of Emma Reinie on January 19, 2010.  President Fred Burkholder called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m.  Board Members present were Emma Reinie, Joyce Hall, Vern Hall, Dave McMullen,  Bob Genest, Anita Mannila, John Lang, Stan Katten, Geraldine Katten, Jerry Gaines, Richard Welsh, and Georgia Cordero.  There were no guests.

SECRETARY’S REPORT:  The minutes of the December Board meeting were read, discussed  and approved as submitted. 

TREASURER’S REPORT:   The checking account balance is $9,597.40.  The CD balance of  $11,012.09 includes $21.48 interest earned. There were 370 paid memberships deposited to checking account. 

BOARD MEMBERS MONTHLY REPORTS:   The website traffic report indicates that the Web traffic was definitely on the upswing last month. The minutes and Agendas of the meeting continue to be the most visited. Hits on the Home page (for 12/12 to 1/11) were 976. The Board minutes for that time period were 269 hits.  The Hillside Ordinance and the opening of the 22nd Street Park Opening also had many hits. 

Quarterly Reports:  Port Community Development:  Upcoming key events include the Waterfront Improvement Development on Thursday, Feb.11, 2010 at the Crown Plaza Hotel Ballroom at 6:30 p.m. which will be the L.A. Waterfront “kickoff” public meeting.

Architectural Committee:  A report by Jerry Gaines,  Chairman, “What Makes South Shores Special” includes information on the history of South Shores development of  the Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (CC&Rs)  as well as information on the upcoming Hillside Ordinance from the Planning Dept.  This article will be printed in the upcoming VIEWPOINT which will published and mailed in March 2010.

Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council:  Nothing new to report.
 Ponte Vista:  Nothing new to report…..possible zone change in the works.

Parks and Graffiti:  Graffiti in the park is under control at present time.

New Hardscape submittal status:  A notification letter will be received by Jan. 22, 2010 regarding the proposal for the new hardscape. 

OLD BUSINESS:  VIEWPOINT:  A mockup of the proposed 2010  VIEWPOINT was presented to the board. It will include the Preisdents Notes, information on the Annual Meeting, Photos of the Annual Reception and of the Board, Messages from Janice Hahn amd LAPD Officer Joe Buscaino as well as Vice President Richard Welsh view on  the views of nature from a South Shores resident.  Dave McMullen will update readers on the SSHOA Website. 

MEMBERSHIP:   There has been a very good response to mailings of letters for Membership renewals and new memberships.  Currently we have 336 paid members (45 new members) and 2 new Life Members.  Decals will be delivered to all paid members by the Board Members. 

GIFT TO SOUTH SHORES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:  Georgia Cordero will contact Principal Paul Suzuki to determine when  Board Members will present our donation to the school  in upcoming weeks. 

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR:  A  motion was made and approved to have some kind of South Shores Citizen Recognition.  Details are being worked out by various Board members.

SSHOA E-MAIL INITIATIVE:  It was proposed that about 300 e-mails to be sent to Membership  on a quarterly basis  to encourage direct communication between Association and its members.  Dave McMullen will research at least 3 companies who will bid on handling our quarterly e-mails to members, and he will report back to the Board.

NEW BUSINESS:  A letter was read to the board regarding a complaint on overgrowth of vegetation on Western Ave. near the Bank of America.

MEETING ADJOURNED:   9:20 pm

NEXT BOARD MEETING:  to be held at home of Anita Mannila on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.

on the Harbor Area, Los Angeles

More than 1,300 law enforcement officers fanned out across the San Pedro area, arresting 80 alleged members and associates of the Rancho San Pedro gang, otherwise known as "RSP." 

Over 230 individuals are named in both federal and state court documents that allege a host of crimes, including violent acts and firearms and narcotics trafficking. 

This massive operation stems from a 2 1/2 year investigation initiated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and the Los Angeles Police Department that uncovered a  wide range of criminal activities related to the gang.
